Innovative Energy Generation: Solar Thermal Power Plants as the Key to Efficient Energy Storage. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is researching and testing this technology in collaboration with industrial partners. The QuellTech Q6 laser scanner is utilized to non-invasively measure the thickness of ceramic particle layers.In a pioneering approach, the QuellTech Q6 laser scanner contributes to achieving an optimal configuration of these particles. The scanner’s capacity to accurately measure the rotating drum, where ceramic particles are employed for heat storage, allows for precise monitoring. This integration not only accelerates projects but also ensures quality assurance by identifying irregularities in drum rotation and compensating for them through meticulous adjustments.

In this QuellTech turnkey solution , the QuellTech Image Processing Software enables the individual definition of tolerance fields and the detection of long-term trends that can occur, for example, due to tool wear. At the same time, the software remains parameterizable for the user without further programming. The QuellTech thickness measurement consists of 2 or more laser line sensors, where 2 laser line sensors 180 Grand are facing each other and the material to be measured passes between them. This solution can be implemented with QuellTech Q4–Q5 or Q6 laser scanners. With this method of coating thickness measurement, many profiles are measured in the direction of movement of the medium and produce in the result a point cloud of the thickness or coating thickness, which can be detected immediately in the case of deviations from the tolerance, over the entire width of the material.

The rugged laser measuring equipment of QuellTech GmbH offers implementation of high-speed, contact-free inspection procedures even in a fully automated run. Weld seams can be optically examined to 100% giving a visual record. This includes parametric defect highlighting for automatic pass/fail results with live and post-weld measurement for weld defect criteria, HiLo and re-entrant angle. Pipe end bevels can be inspected in full while simultaneously measuring the ovality, generating fit-up sequencing and external Hilo analysis to reduce time, wastage and improve the integrity of the welds. This information is combined with the internal weld scan as a complete package of data for each weld. The QuellTech laser sensor family Q4 or Q5 used for these tasks is generally mounted on an arm of a rotational axis, to scan along the complete 360° angle of the internal surface in a sequence of strips.

Surface Inspection in Cable Production Initial Situation: The client manufactures isolated electric cables in form of endless products, with different diameters and isolations. Until now, only random sampling was performed on the production line. From now on, quality assurance has to take place to 100% by inline inspection. Quelltech Solution: The solution consists in a configuration of four Q6 laser scanners, mutually displaced by 90°, so the entire surface of the cables is in the field of view. As production speed, caused by the inspection procedure, should not be affected, very high scanning rates are required, as well as a powerful data processing equipment. The position of a measured defect is recorded in cable direction.

Initial situation Shearing or laser cutting processes for metal parts often leave burr traces on the surface. This is the case with all sheet metal parts for example: steel, stainless steel or aluminium.The size of burrs that their customer are dealing with are in the micrometer range, and some of them may not be discovered by visual inspection. The robustness of a manual inspection cannot be compared with the speed and the repeatability of a 2D profile inspection by means of a contactless QuellTech Q4 laser scanner. In addition to the verification with respect to burrs and radius, QuellTech decided to fit a circle to the edge to see whether metal sheets still preserve their original form after deburring operation. This means that our inspection covers two tasks at the same time.

Initial situation: The client is one of the oldest tire manufacturers in the world. He is preparing a quality improvement for some of his production lines and establishes a fully automatic process. One of the corresponding tasks refers to the preproduction phase, in which an inspection of the depth of the tread grooves, the height of the adjacent peaks and their lateral distance to certain reference lines of the rubber layers takes place. The quality of the products until now was dependent on manual tread groove and peak inspections of workers. QuellTech solution A high-resolution QuellTech 2D/3D Q5-240 Laser Scanner proved to be adequate for this project. It is placed over a continuously running conveyer belt. The efficient QuellTech measurement software is integrated as well. It is used for detection of coordinates of the base of the tread grooves and the peaks. After completion of each 2D profile measurement, coordinates are calculated, and results are sent to PLC.
